Our son will be 16 months old around halloween. We are dressing him up as a little cowboy…we are putting him in a little pair of boots, blue jeans, and a long sleeve red and brown plaid button down shirt. I found him a little cowboy hat (that swallows his head whole but its soooo cute) and a little Marshall badge…

So what are your kids dressing up for as halloween??

Dressing Right for the Hunt

When it comes to dressing for success, most of us think of business power suits or starched blouses and polished shoes. But clothing can also make a big difference while hunting, and can in fact be the difference between a successful and satisfying hunt and a miserable and unrewarding one. Just as it is important to select proper hunting weapons and equipment, it is also absolutely essential to wear appropriate clothing for the hunt. First and foremost, each hunter should invest in some garments that are blaze orange in color. “Blaze orange” is the shade of bright, neon-hued orange that is often used in hunting caps, vests, and jackets. While the color is rather intense and probably won’t win you any fashion awards, it is a specific hue that was engineered especially for hunting safety some years ago. Before the advent of blaze orange, those hunters who traipsed through the woods or brush in camo clothing or other colors that blended into the environmental landscape were virtually invisible. That was great for stalking prey, but it often exposed those sportsmen to catastrophic hunting accidents. Since other hunters could not see them due to decreased visibility there was an increased possibility that they would be mistaken for wildlife and accidentally shot. Hunting experts then came up with blaze orange, which can be seen clearly from a long distance and have such a distinctive color that it automatically alerts others to the presence of a person. But animals like deer cannot see it the way humans do, so it does not frighten them away. That makes blaze orange the ideal safety color and many local hunting laws require that people who go hunting wear blaze orange somewhere on their body for added security. Buy some blaze orange hunting apparel and stay safe while also staying comfortable in the woods. But hunters with guns are not the only hazard, because hunting exposes the hunter to poisonous or annoying insects. To avoid tics and other insects that can pose potential health hazards it is advisable to wear clothing that won’t attract them. That’s why the uniforms of most forest service workers or park rangers are generally drab green or dark brown, because tics and similar insects are typically attracted to lighter colors. Wearing a white shirt on a hunt might mean catching more tics than wild game, whereas choosing a dark khaki or green color may help you avoid any unwanted critters crawling up and down your sleeves. To protect from snakes that might come as an unwelcome surprise out in the wilderness, wear high boots of thick leather, like cowboy boots, and pants made of tough and durable material like canvas. Thick pants also protect from briars, thorns, and barbwire fences. A hunter is much more likely to deal with those kinds of threats than with poisonous snakes. Long sleeved shirts are also a good idea to help avoid infection from plants like poison ivy. Wearing hunting clothes is also a good idea because ordinary street clothes are not strong enough to endure scratches and scrapes, and they are easily torn to shreds during a strenuous hunt thanks to numerous snags. Pick the right clothes and they will keep you safe, comfortable, and well protected no matter where the prey you’re hunting decides to lead you.
