Preparing for a Disaster, Cheap & Easy – Part 1

The simple act of Preparing for a Disaster could save your life and your families so your not caught flat footed and helpless.

Disasters happen all the time whether they be man made or natural, and how prepared you are can have a dramatic affect on your life. If a disaster is coming or has already arrived, such as weather, your too late. Preparedness needs to be done before something happens. It’s not a matter of IF, but WHEN.

It is very easy to become complacent when things seem to be going well. “I’ve been through dozens of hurricanes” I’ve heard people boast. Great, ask the people that were in Katrina if they still think that. Situations can change dramatically in an instant. It comes swiftly and knocks you over the head, and hopefully opens your eyes to what’s important to you and how a little preparation could have helped improve the situation.

If you think your prepared, just do a double take and make sure you really are. Having a nice supply in your home is only one little piece of the preparedness pie. You may not have access to your home. Do you have the same supplies in your vehicle? Let’s take a quick look at some potential disasters that have and could occur:Common and Possible DisastersHurricanes- This is a common disaster that happens every year and the severity varies. Flooding- Often simultaneous with hurricanes or excessive rainfall and drainage buildup. Flooding can be very disastrous, destroying roads, homes, and life. Tornado- Common in many areas and a hit or miss disaster. Very powerful and deadly. Snow & Ice- Very common in northern regions. Power outages that can last weeks, dangerous road conditions, and whiteouts leave many people stranded every year. Earthquakes- Another common occurrence in many regions, which much too often causes complacency. Earthquakes can be non destructive tremors, or highly destructive to both life and property. Anthrax, biological, nuclear attacks- These are always a possibility, especially nowadays. They can happen anywhere at any time without warning. Sept 11 is a prime example.

All of these disasters can shut down transportation, empty the store shelves, overwhelm emergency resources and services, grossly inflate common item prices (water, food, plywood, fuel, etc) and cause widespread panic. Grocery store shelves are stripped of necessities almost always overnight, and this happens even for very minor disruptions, never mind a large tragedy. Most people are so unprepared they don’t even have basics like food, water, first aid kits, and most importantly a plan. What You Can Do To Prepare

Due to the numerous potentials, what should you put aside and prepare for? If you live in a normally occurring disaster area such as “tornado alley” in the Midwest USA, or the “West coast earthquakes”, or “Southern hurricanes”, or “flood prone” areas, you should certainly expect a disaster to happen and put aside items that regularly disappear.

No matter where you live, put aside the basic necessities first, such as:Food- You must eat food to live. Water- You must drink water to live. First Aid Kits- It would be a real tragedy to develop a serious infection because you allowed a simple scratch to go untreated because you didn’t have a first aid kit to clean and care for it. There are many more items you should have, but these are the bare necessities essential to life. You shouldn’t expect someone else to take care of your needs, and certainly don’t expect to be welcomed by others who are trying to care for their own needs and survival. This is gambling with your life. What To Do in The Event of a Disaster

Depending on the situation, the impending or occurring disaster, you have two choices. Stay at home, or Evacuate & Travel. Stay at Home – Snowstorms, earthquakes (maybe), cyber attacks, biological attacks, or anything that collapses the infrastructure. Staying home is often your best choice. Evacuate & Travel – Hurricanes, flooding, wildfires, or disasters with advance notice, evacuating may be your best choice. If your home is threatened, leaving could save your life.

Staying in a familiar area and having emergency supplies at hand is always the best choice whenever possible. I am not a big proponent of listening to what self appointed desk jockeys have to say. They do not have your personal interest in mind, and if they are wrong about the advice they gave you, their answer is “Oh well”.

You need to think and act for yourself and should care for your own needs. Don’t be herded to the slaughter by non interested strangers. Your Disaster Kit

Putting together a disaster kit is a personal thing in many ways, but everyone should have the basics. At least 2 weeks worth of food, 2 weeks of water, a good first aid kit, extra clothing, and any special needs. Yes, I know FEMA (Forget Everyone Manage After), advises 3 days, but I assure you, they will not be coming to your home to refresh your supplies on the fourth day.

Excessive detail is beyond the scope of this article, so we’ll summarize some priorities for your disaster kit. Food- You must eat food to live. Keep non perishable foods that require no refrigeration and little or no water to prepare. Water- You must drink water to live. Put aside 15 gallons PER person PER 2 weeks, this is a minimum. You can read the article specific to just this subject by Clicking Here. First Aid Kits- It would be a real tragedy to develop a serious infection because you allowed a simple scratch to go untreated because you didn’t have a first aid kit to clean and care for it. Have a first aid kit that includes items to treat lacerations, sprains, burns, infection, anti-diarrhea, pain, and antiseptic wash at the very least. Special Needs- There are items you may need beyond the essentials. Medications, toilet paper, sleeping bags, warm clothes, hats, gloves, boots, flashlights, diapers, contacts, glasses, batteries, etc. You can add you own personal needs to the list. Spare Cash- The amount is up to you and your budget. I would have several hundred dollars. It needs to be cash. A debit card is NOT cash, a credit card is NOT cash, a check is NOT cash, I think you get the point. Businesses, banks, atm machines are easily shut down and rely way too much on the computer to stay in business. If you’ve ever been is a “situation” then you already know stores will stop accepting credit cards, debit cards, and banks will hold your money hostage and restrict the amount of money you can withdraw. I’ve been there, done that. You need cash only. Still there is no guarantee the store will be open, but if your mobile and find one, it may be the only way you can pay. Biological Man made Disaster Supplies- Nobody likes to think about it, but the reality is that we face many threats nowadays other then natural disasters. We live in a new world with the real possibility of a disaster occurring. Some basics you could store to protect yourself are: Chemical gas masks, at the very least, a surgical mask. Potassium Iodide Tablets, these are helpful in the event of a radioactive fallout. The tablets basically flood your thyroid glands and help prevent thyroid cancer which can be caused by radiation absorption. Allergic individuals to iodine should not take these.

All of these items are fairly inexpensive and easily obtained. Keep supplies in your home AND your vehicle. Don’t expect to have time to transport your supplies from the house to the vehicle. You may have to jump in and go.

Prepare yourself and you family with a very inexpensive insurance, the disaster kit.

If you feel this whole article is overdoing it, and nothing really will happen to you, then just ask yourself this question, “If I was caught in a disaster, would a disaster kit help or hinder my survivability”? I think you already know the answer. . .

Quick easy Halloween costumes you can whip up in an afternoon!

Life sometimes puts way more on our plates than we can manage. Just as you’re recovering from back to school frenzy and are reintegrating driving kids here and there for after school activities, Halloween is upon you before you know it. If you’ve got a few kids to costume up, it can run into some money. If you’re short on time, money or both, here are five quick easy Halloween costumes you can make yourself in just a couple of hours. A trip to the dollar store for a few nifty accessories and you’ve got some happy trick or treaters. These costumes are a hit with young children. The quintessential quick easy Halloween costume is the ghost. Yes, the plain white sheet is the main part of this costume, but your ghost needn’t be a plain Jane or Joe. This is a styled out ghost, cool as can be. Arrange the sheet over the child so that it’s evenly distributed by length and width. Ask the child to point to each eye – they think this is silly and it adds to the fun. Take a marker and draw circles, big enough for clear viewing. Trim the hem as necessary. Pin armhole openings, loose enough to allow easy movement. Remove the sheet. With a glue gun, attach sequins or beads around the eye holes and day-glow stickers everywhere. Stitch the armhole openings. You’re done!Your little princess will feel like a real Princess in this quick easy Halloween costume. You can find the basic dress at a thrift shop. Look for a special occasion dress. Let your child do the choosing of color and style. A stop at the fabric shop will yield all the trims, lace, appliques and satin flowers you’ll need to make this dress truly special. A rhinestone tiara completes the picture perfect Princess costume. Little girls invariably want to be an angel at least once! Again, it’s easy to find a white, special occasion dress at thrift shops. The fabric shop supplies more adornments. Use a spray adhesive to make sprinkles of glitter stick, as desired. SpongeBob Square Pants(TM) is a funny looking guy popular with boys. All you need is a rectangular cardboard box and some acrylic paint. For authenticity, Google an image of this character. Mark the eye and mouth openings and paint away. This quick  easy Halloween costume goes faster when your child participates in the painting, which he’ll want to do!A pair of jeans, a plaid shirt and a few dollar store accessories are all you need for the cowboy or cowgirl costume. With a hat, six-shooter belt and inexpensive boots, your kid is ready to rustle up some treats! No matter which of these quick easy Halloween costumes you choose, attach reflective, glittery or glow-in-the-dark doo-dads for safety’s sake. A little imagination and a few hours is all you need for a Happy Halloween!

Easy Wild West Party Ideas

2
Dec/09
0

The fun starts when you decide to use wild west party ideas. You may have a celebration of success, a birthday party, graduation party, retirement party or any other kind of party in mind. No matter what the occasion, a wild west party will be just perfect. For older ages take your guests and yourself back to the days when you would run around your home playing at being cowboys, the sheriff, the outlaw and other wild west characters. In those days you may have watched westerns where the bad guy bought it in the end. I still like to look back on some of those epic westerns. I also like the moody Gregory Peck movies where he is the reformed gunslinger trying to shale off his past. Now imagine your guests getting dressed up as cowboys or the sheriff. They will probably go right back in their minds to their childhood and be all ready to have fun. For younger guests a wild west party is such a great theme. They can run around and play so many games. They will be all dressed up and ready to play. The range of games, the excellent decorations and the fun favors and prizes will surely make it a great party. You may even have one of those wild west venues or theme parks close to you. They can make the best party ever. They have the overall atmosphere, the right setting and the entertainers to make it fabulous. The whole party will be taken care of by the venue. They will have props, games, prizes, food and fun. They will have theatrical shows and shoot outs at The OK Corral. For example, you have a graduation party or a birthday party to arrange for a kindergarten child. The budget you have will determine how far you can go, however you should be able to find or borrow lots of wild west stuff to use. To make the venue excellent you can fill it with decorations and games areas. The kids families may help with setting the venue up. Starting with murals, you can use murals to create a jail, bank, saloon, barber shop and a hotel. The mural will show the front of the building and give it a name related to the guest of honor. The rest of the decorations can have photos of the birthday person or graduate dressed up as either the sheriff or an outlaw. I like the idea of wanted posters with the guest of honor pictures as the outlaw. Borrow as many cowboy hats, boots, cacti, western movie posters, posters of the wild west, horse equipment and wild west signposts as you can. Also have lots of cowboy language on your party signposts. Add in lots of cowboy type games and music, and you will have great wild west party ideas. I also like the idea of hiring a bucking bronco and a fastest gun video game. I hope you love your wild west party ideas.

I love horse riding, dancing, looking after my children and wild west party ideas.

5 Easy Steps to Improve Your Email Subject Lines

2
Dec/09

Masthead sells. By some accounts, like David Pecker’s, the CEO of American Media, the cover is 80 percent of the sale. This is reasonable, given that Pecker is responsible for grocery store, bubble gum tabloids like National Enquirer and Star. While the magazine cover has artwork and photographs to help sell each issue, email has only a short line of copy: the subject line. What’s it take to create the perfect subject line? My first response is usually a copywriter. Not just for the single line of poetry that is the subject line-but how it connects to your campaign and reveals the content. If writing your subject line is the last step you undertake before sending your email, that’s fine and not unlike magazine covers. But too often I think “last step” is metaphoric for harried, slapdash work. Peter Hyoguchi, CEO of Strike. TV, says: “It takes a professional writer to monetize this medium. . . Without a writer, this medium is a trinket, it’s just a mechanism. And you cannot monetize a trinket. This medium was built for storytelling and it was built for professional storytelling. ” Well said, Mr Hyoguchi. He’s referring to the Web in general, but email falls into the mix. Before jumping into the subject of subject lines with our five steps, let’s take a moment to consider the job of the subject line. You want your recipient to open your email. You might argue that open rates are not as important nor directly representative of the conversation rate-it’s an analytical debate for the metric minded. For our needs, the open rate leads to the sale. That is, you can’t have the success metrics without the recipient opening your email. But to convert viewers, your subject line needs to be straightforward and truly representative of the content. This segues nicely into our first step. Step 1: Keep it simple and informativeMake a simple statement. You have about 50 character spaces. Explain what’s inside your email. Tell don’t sell. And that’s it folks. If the offer is bad, rewriting it to sound good is not effective. This is where open rates and conversion rates are out of whack. But if you make a simple, direct statement about a solid bit of news or offer. . . Of course, simplicity is sometimes not so simple. If you try for heavy sales messaging and the ad lingo to match, you won’t discover much success. For direct mail, banks and credit card companies have mastered the art of the plain white envelope with a single statement: “Account information enclosed. ” This style connected with a recognized business name has been proven effective time and time again. The same is true for your email campaigns and the “from” and “subject” lines and how they work together. It’s instructive to consider the emails that are the most popular with the highest open rates. These would be emails forwarded from friends, family, and colleagues; and business or transactional replies, such as a Welcome to the Online Community confirmation. If the recipient knows your company, trusts you, there’s surely more impetus to keep it simple. When the “from” and “subject” lines work together, the most popular email subject lines with the highest open rates tend to be things like: “Our upcoming events schedule,” or “We’re throwing a party. “Step 2: Write with audience and long-term marketing goals in mindDon’t write your subject lines with sales-heavy messages. Here’s a little about email’s direct-mail heritage. It’s a cautionary tale, interesting and informative, for writers to have a little background in the art of direct sales. Traditionally for direct mail marketers, a good copywriter was analogous to a salesperson who could type. The goal was always unflinchingly direct-improve ROI with short-term sales tactics. So direct mail copywriters became the arbiters and experts of junk mail and their writing typifies a sideshow barker-”But, wait! There’s more! What would you expect to pay for these additional steak knives?”Spam-style Email marketers followed suit, adopting tactics with FREE always capitalized and unadulterated punctuation abuse with far too many exclamation points!!!! In other words, the marketing channel became a sales channel with heavy sales messaging. The result was spam. In fact, too much capitalization and bad punctuation in the subject line can send your email directly to most spam filters. While marketing delivery vehicles change, this fundamental question remains: Should marketing support and be subservient to sales, or vice versa? IMHO: the job of marketing is to make sales unnecessary. Nowhere does this seem truer than in an email subject line. So, my advice: don’t write your subject lines with sales-heavy messages. Step 3: Segment and personalize your messagesObviously knowing who the folks are on your list and knowing what they want to receive is an extraordinary bit of IQ for your marketing efforts. Ideally, you want to personalize your subject lines based on the segment. This is a powerful approach. Try including the recipient’s name and referencing things like purchasing history, previous Web visits, or products that connect to their preferences. This is especially important when considering the type of email that your recipient signed up to receive. The email and therefore the subject line should be consistent with their subscription. Is the content of the email relevant to this member? If someone expects an email newsletter but receives a coupon offer that you’ve decided to email to your entire list, you’ll watch your open and unsubscribe rates climb together. On the other hand, if you have segmented your list properly and offer several subscription options, people who signed up for coupons should see a simple, promotional message like: 20% Off Coupon Inside. This offer connected to a “from” line that’s recognized will work well for you. For promotional emails, you can segment your list further depending on your products and services – for instance: cowboy boots and cologne are for men, or for women as a gift sales effort. Step 4: Inject a sense of urgencyEach subject has a verb. Use a verb and call to action, especially with deadlines to impart a fast approaching date. Engage your reader with a hook. Keep in mind, the job of your subject line is just to encourage a recipient to want to open to learn more. That’s it. You don’t have to give away the entire story. Deadlines, dollars, and strong verbs will help you impart that sense of urgency. “Order today for 20% off” or “Act Fast for Your Chance to Win”. As mentioned above, these promotional messages are only truly effective if the “from” line is recognized and the recipient wants to shop or consider your product or service. If you have an email newsletter, see step one: keep it simple. Just write the name of the newsletter and the issue number. Their desire to read your newsletter should provide enough urgency for successful campaigns. Step 5. Test your subject linesOf course, the discussion on your subject line approach and creative opinions change dramatically with testing. There’s a reason TV Guide will print as many as 24 different covers. Ideally, you should test subject lines on a segment of your list. See what works. But pay close attention to all the metrics, not just open rates. Examine what’s happening once folks open the email to truly determine the value of your subject lines and to see how the messages play for various segments from your list.

County Bbq Wedding Receptions Are Easy On The Budget

Themed weddings are in! And wouldn’t it be great if the theme actually helped your budget?!
Well, if you and your fiance are a country couple at heart, or REAL horse-riding, cow-herding country folk, then you’re in luck!  An old fashioned BBQ wedding reception will help save on your menu price and be major fun, and who wouldn’t like a Cowboy Wedding Reception?  It’s a chance to get out those cowboy boots we all so love.
At the end of this article are a couple menu ideas that might help inspire your inner country soul to create a unique and fun experience for your guests – all without paying a fortune for your meal!  Often, the receptions that offer the “plated chicken dinner” lack style and leave guests feeling a bit bland about your reception food.   I encourage you to spice it up!  Add some color and unexpected “flavor” to your wedding day meal. . . make it memorable!
As for affordable country BBQ décor ideas – have fun!  Most brides tend to stick with the traditional white & ivory color schemes – don’t!  Get creative! Use bright linens like the colors in a beautiful country sunset, or earth tones of blue and green like the mountains and pastures, or traditional checkered tablecloths for a more casual daytime event.   Mason jars with wild flowers, fresh herbs or wheat would be great.   Put beer bottles and soda in galvanized tubs for a western feel at the bar or placed around an outdoor reception.   Hay bales, Cowbells and wagon wheels will add to the look as well.
Remember the more “formal” feeling the reception, the more it is likely to cost you.   Over-the-top buffets with expensive cuts of beef, seafood’s and elaborate floral arrangements are pricey, so think about a bit more casual feeling themed reception.   Casual style receptions end up being a unique way for couples to express themselves and their likes without breaking the bank and a BBQ Wedding Reception is a perfect example of this!  Here are a couple great menu ideas for a Country Barbecue Wedding Reception — and it’s not just chicken. Yum! Yum! Yum!
BBQ Wedding Reception Menu Idea #1
Barbecue Chicken * Country-style Pork Spareribs  * Sweet & Smokey Baked Beans * Corn on the Cob * Traditional Coleslaw * Watermelon, Honeydew & Cantaloupe Skewers * Cornbread with Honey-Butter
Barbecue Wedding Reception Menu Idea #2
Sliders! (Petite style Burgers) * Apricot-Honey Glazed Chicken * Red Skinned Potato Salad * Watermelon and Fresh Strawberry Display * Farmer’s Market Green Salad with homemade Dressings * Biscuits & Honey
And instead of traditional Wedding Cake, how about a display of glorious and delicious pies!
