Now That You’ve Made History, Please Don’t Abandon Non-violence–an Open Letter to the Black Church
Dec/090
On behalf of white evangelical Christians everywhere, I’d like to extend my sincere contratulations to the black church for a well deserved victory. The election of Barack Obama as the first African American president of the United States is a watershed moment for world history.
I wasn’t around during the decade of the civil rights movement, but here is what I’ve heard. At a time when your people were considered less than human by mainstream America, you chose to love your oppressors. You faced the attack dogs and the fire hoses. You refused to ride in the back seat of buses. You broke down the walls of segregated high schools with your heads held high. You sang in mass to the tune of ?We Shall Overcome??and overcame you did.
My message to the black church is simple, but urgent. To my fellow black Christians I?d like to say thank you and please. Thank you for winning the struggle for civil rights but please, oh please, do not give up your non-violent heritage that made it possible. In a world where the very presence of nuclear weapons puts the human race in jeopardy, if there ever was a time for the message of non-violence to reclaim its rightful place in American history, that time is now?and you?re the ones that can make it happen!
The irony is now that you have a man commanding the most powerful military in the world, the temptation is all too great to forget that, unlike the American revolution where victory came at the barrel of the gun, your victory came not by the power of might, but by the power of right. Your victory is a victory that came not from violence, but from non-violence.
Last year I was struck by the irony of hearing a speech by John McCain praising Dr. King for his life and legacy when, as I recall, it was Dr. King who said, ?The greatest purveyor of violence in the world today is my own government. ? Dr. King was the most vocal critic of U. S. foreign policy in his day and yet how often is he praised for his courage to face down his own government?
This year I?m struck by another irony. In a blog post entitled ?The forgotten heart of King?s dream,? author Greg Boyd points out that every year he and his wife attend the annual Dr. Martin Luther King breakfast. This year the keynote speaker was four- star general Colin Powell. In Powell?s speech, he attributed the greatness of America to the greatness of our soldiers throughout history, and even equated soldiers today with Kings call to service. Colin Powell is perhaps one of the most honorable men to ever grace the U. S. military, and of course there are many honorable men and women serving in our armed forces today, but isn?t it ironic that a message praising U. S. military might would be given at a service commemorating Dr. Martin Luther King?
All of the evidence from his books, speeches, essays, and sermons suggests that Dr. Martin Luther King believed that violence never achieves lasting solutions. Dr. King taught that non-violent redemptive love is the most powerful force for good in the world?especially when directed towards one?s enemies. We all seem to know intuitively that Dr. King changed the world for the better, but few today seem to pay much attention to how he changed the world. Since September 11th, King?s values of loving the enemy and turning the other cheek are now viewed as hopelessly na? by mainstream American culture?including by many in the black church.
As a lifelong member of the Pentecostal/charismatic tradition, I consider the historic shift of much of black Pentecostalism from pro-peace to pro-war to be nothing short of tragic. I have a hunch that the influence of Christian Zionism has a lot to do with this, but regardless of the reason, it?s high time for black Pentecostals?and the black church everywhere?to reclaim it?s non-violent heritage.
American Christianity as we know it today is in desperate need of a reformation. For the first three hundred years of Christian history, Christians were thrown to the lions because they embraced the cross and renounced the sword. The vast majority of American Christians today have forgotten this. Who better can remind us of this than you? The media may mock you. The world may laugh at you. But one thing you can know for sure. If you can bring non-violence once again to the forefront of the American psyche, there’s a white boy from Jefferson County Missouri cheering for you every step of the way.

High Heel Shoes – Facts And History
Dec/090
Some people attribute the existence of the high heel shoes to Catherine of Medici from Paris, who wore it owing to her short stature and became a part of the fashion shortly after. These fashionable shoes enjoy a varied history in men and women.
Initially, men and women both wore high heel shoes for centuries. The lower class walked barefoot and people wearing them were mostly popular figures such as actors. They wore high heel shoes indicating their social status and trying to gain importance. The men heels were primarily worn in the courts. The modern fashion came from Italian style ranging from 15 to 42 cm. During the 17th century there was a change stating that women wore high heel shoes to seduce and marry men. Later, Giovanni Casanova also declared his admiration for shoes that showed the beautiful legs of women.
The year 1791 brought a significant revolution when Napoleon banished high heel shoes attempting to illustrate equality. Regardless of Napoleonic code, Marie Antoinette in 1793 appeared wearing shoes of two inches to the scaffold. Once again in 1860s heels gained utmost popularity and the contraption of sewing machine bestowed with great varieties in high heel shoes. In fact, Victorians felt wearing them gave a symbolic curve to every woman. The late 19th century brought widespread popularity, but in 1930s the western shoe with heels received favorable response. In early 1960s, miniskirt came into full form and the stilettos emerged into fashion enhancing the look of legs. Stiletto heels are long and thin varying in lengths from 1 to 2 inches, and are especially for women.
Even the tennis shoes came high heeled. The heelless high heel shoes allowed women to wear all types of shoes. Though, it seemed to be the height of eccentricity, the gesture of having an assortment of fashion choices could not be ignored. Women love wearing shoes matching their outfit and appreciate wrapping their delicate and elegant feet. Especially, the high heel shoes certainly bring compliments as they look empowered and highly confident.
High heel shoes indicate fashionable footwear that raises the feet of the wearer significantly. The footwear creates an aesthetic feeling as a person appears slender and tall. Today, they are obtainable in diverse styles and shapes such as pumps, tapered, stilettos, blocks, blade and wedge. Fashion icons regard heels above 8. 5cm as high and consider anything below it as medium or low heel. It is noted that women only wear them, but the Cuban heels and cowboy boots are worn by men as well. Initially, raised heels lead to slipping forward while riding, but over decades it became stylized.
France later created high heel shoes ideal for men and women. This trend declined during the French revolution, but resurfaced in 1800s. The shoes went through several changes such as the late 70s preferred low heels, while the late 80s and early 90s were happy with high heels. In this period, the heels shape changed from 70s with block to 90s with tapered and 80s and post 2000 with stilettos. Recently, the shoes heights vary from 4cm (kitten heel) to 10 cm (spike or stilettos). The extreme high heel shoes are available in 13 cm and have aesthetic reasons to be worn. However, they cannot be worn practically everyday.
High heel shoes are popular among women as it adds height to the wearer and give an aesthetic appeal. It is also believed to alter the angle of the foot and also enhances the calves shape.

Cowboy Up: The History of Bull Riding
Dec/092
Product Description
What started as an exhibition to entertain audiences has turned into the most popular—and dangerous—event in rodeo: bull riding. When a 150-pound man attempts to ride a two-ton bull with a killer instinct, it’s not a matter of whether the rider will get injured, but when, and how badly. As cowboy Jim Shoulders says, “You can’t stop something like an injury from hurtin’, but you can damn well not let it bother you.” What motivates riders to devote themselves to this challenging sport? Find out in Austinite Gail Woerner’s newest book, which covers bull riding from its beginning into the new millennium.

Horse Spurs and Its History
Dec/090
It is thought that the earliest spurs were probably made from bone or wood. Spurs have been used by horsemen and cowboys throughout the ages. In its earliest days the spur and the metal it was made with were a mark of rank. This is where the expression to “earn your spurs” came from. As punishment a knight would have his spurs and sword broken and taken away as part of his disgrace Rowels came along in France or Spain in the 10th Century or so and evolved through the Northern European and Spanish cultures according to their needs at the time. The Rowel of a spur is usually round and spins like a wheel with spikes that attach to the neck or shank of the spur. It is the part that actually touches the horse and makes a jingle noise when the rider is walking around.
Spurs are best known in the American West for use with the American cowboys. Spur styles continue to change just as the saddle, chaps and all other horse-riding equipment has changed over the years. The influence of early Spanish design is still evident in today’s spurs. Chaps also influenced the spur in that where long chaps are worn, a dropped heel pattern and a chap guard were invented. The chap guard has a curved blunt piece that comes out on the shank just behind the heel which keeps the chap away from the rowel. The rowel is usually sharp and could tear up the leather of your chap in no time.
There are as many spur designs as their are horses in Wyoming and every maker tends to put their own special interest and personality to each one. Western style spurs tend to be heavy and are often decorated with rowels that rotate or spin. The neck of the spur is longer than others to fit the style of the western rider. The English spur is very different as it is lighter and more slim. It has a short neck with usually no rowel. The English spur has a blunt projection that is usually rounded. There are some English spurs that use a rowel, but they are rounded with no spikes and are used in sports requiring finesse such as dressage. Its goal is not to speed the horse up but to control his movements in precise complex movements.
A few types of spurs are: Prince of Wales style, The Disk style, Swan neck with rowels and the Waterford spur. They are divided in to Men’s, Women’s and Children’s, according to the width of the spur. They also come in different neck lengths.
There are also modern type spurs used by motorcyclists. They are basically worn as foot jewelry that are hung off of the leather motorcycle boots. They are sometimes similar to spurs worn by equestrians and can actually be a safety tool as some of them have bright material that can worn motor vehicle drivers of their presence on the road. They can even add small strobing LED lights to them for added safety at night.
In any case, the spur has had a long history and multiple uses even in modern day. They will always be ultimately thought of as a tool of the American cowboy in the end.

Western Wear History
Dec/090
You don’t have to look to far to find out the origins of western apparel, whether you listen to tales of the wild west, watching those old cowboy films or listening to the stars of country music. Western wear derives its name from a unique style of the clothes worn by men and women in the 19th-century American West. It has undergone many changes since the early days of the Wild West with its open ranges, wagon trains, cattle drives, and notorious outlaws. The apparel worn by legends of the west such as Wyatt Earp, Billy the Kid, and Wild Bill Hickock is decidedly different from most of today’s western fashions, but it was this era that laid the foundations to the western fashion we know and wear today. The cowboy way was a way of life throughout the American west up until the early 1900s. Western apparel got started along with those who were known as cowboys after the American Civil War. Ranchers in Texas had to find a market for their large excess stock of cattle. Meanwhile, on the east coast beef was in short supply. Thus, the ranchers drove their cattle north to the nearest railroads, for example Fort Worth, which became a major shipping point for livestock in 1876. This prompted plans in 1887 for the construction of the Union Stockyards about two and one half miles north of the Tarrant County Courthouse. It went into full operation about 1889. Mexican vaqueros and Americans fleeing the law also made up a large number of cowboys roaming the untamed west. The attire of these early cowboys was usually very plain and simple. Full length trousers made of canvas were tucked inside their cowboy boots, allowing them to ride several rough trails before their jeans wore out. Shirts of the early cowboy were usually cotton or wool, sometimes with simple pin striping, and had no collar. These shirts pulled over their heads with buttons running only partially down the front of the shirt. A bandana was worn to protect the neck of the cowboy from the elements while riding the trail, which was also used as a mask in dust storms as well as outlaws using them as a mask during bank raids and hold ups. A cowboy’s hat was very practical and used for everything from protecting them from the sun, to providing them with something to drink out of when fresh water could be found. This is how, allegedly, the name the “Ten Gallon Hat” was born because of its ability to hold water. The early days of Hollywood revived the old west spirit, the cowboy way of life, and sparked new interest in western wear across the nation. Gene Autry, John Wayne, and Roy Rogers lit up cinema screens and those of a certain generation will never forget our television screens filled popular western series such as Rawhide with Rowdy Yates (Clint Eastwood), Gunsmoke with Dennis Weaver as Chester and Bonanza with Little Joe (Michael Landon) all dressed in western apparel. Western wear became prominent in pop culture during the 1960’s with even the Beatles wearing cowboy boots. Western apparel popularised by this era included cowboy hats, fashionable cowboy boots and jeans, as well as collared shirts featuring designs and patterns. Some of most articulate western wear is the custom work created by rodeo tailors such as Nudie Cohn and Manuel, which is characterised by elaborate embroidery and rhinestone decoration. This type of western wear, popularised by country music performers, is the origin of the phrase rhinestone cowboy. Nashville’s country music scene with has kept up the interest in the western fashion industry and the western way of life, and its artists, with such country stars as Garth Brooks, Tim McGraw and Dwight Yokam all sporting cowboy hats, cowboy boots and clothing’ have heavily influenced the western wear of today. Sand-blasted jeans, distressed leather, and ultra-casual dress have become the frontier in modern western apparel; which has become popular with line dancing, western riding, and western fashion together with country music fans all over the world. Classic western wear is still commonplace in American culture. Some western companies focus on maintaining cowboy authenticity in their events, to support re-enactments, staged events, film and theatre. Western wear ranges from accurate historical reproductions of pioneer, mountain man, Civil War, cowboy and Mexican vaquero clothing to the stylised garments for the show business world.
