Marketing Leather Handbags and Accessories to the Younger Market

In the third and final part of the “Marketing Leather to the Younger Market” article trilogy I have decided to focus on leather handbags, clutch bags and small leather goods for the ladies. In the first two parts of “Marketing Leather to the Younger Market” I referred to behavioural aspects of marketing and how environmental factors can affect consumer buyer behaviour. As males are often manipulated by the media and their peer groups about what they should be wearing. A few years ago the younger male market would never have worn neckerchiefs, but now walking down the street I see many young want-to-be cowboys. Maybe soon they will wear leather chaps?! This could lead to further exploration of leather accessories in the future! But the focus in this article is towards why ladies search for the perfect leather fashion handbag and accessories to match. I have many female friends all mad about fashion and having particular accessories and handbags that compliment one-another. I once spent two hours in the one store looking around at the huge range of fashion handbags and accessories waiting for a definitive decision to be made. What goes through our ladies’ heads, I mean it could be seen as a price sensitive issue and the process to buy a new bag may be seen as an indulgence but all the same, two hours to decide that they want to buy that handbag when we both knew that she’ll be buying a handbag regardless. But apparently it is important that they accessorise accordingly with their outfits and have accessories for smart and leisure use. It baffles me why it has become oh so important that they have different outfits and matching accessories to boot. I come to the conclusion that media exposure and relating peer pressure are major factors. I watch a lot of programmes on e4 ad MTV and all of the girly programmes such as The OC, One Tree Hill, The Hills and Sex and the City strongly advocate the needs for girls to indulge in many pairs of shoes and handbags and that outfits are extremely important. Before it was the case for girls to dress to impress the guys but now their focus is to be accepted by their peers more. A social-environment shift of demands has changed the perceptions of the younger market, affecting the cognitive processed of women suggesting they need to have stylish shoes and fashion handbags. I earlier mentioned The OC being a favourite amongst women, watching glamorous boys and girls living the ideal lifestyle with new outfits and accessories to match on every show. Lead actress in the series Mischa Barton has recently launched her handbag line, with a variety of PVC and Leather Handbags within her collection. This is a wise business move, as she is iconic for her fashion sense and her love of handbags. Her website is crisp and epitomises the LA lifestyle of glamour and expense and further still she is high in Google for the term ‘handbag’. I don’t want to get into a sex debate, but stereotypically men have sport as their predominant hobby, spending their earned cash on supporting a football team so why shouldn’t ladies treat fashion and accessorising as a hobby. Who cares that media manipulation affects their true motivation? If they enjoy ruining a guys Saturday afternoon going around shoe shops, looking for leather handbags or finding the perfect accessories for that dress then so be it.

The smaller a business is, the harder it is for them to find the funds to utilise the expertise of professionals, to help their businesses grow.
To find a unique point of difference when you are a Micro or Home Based Business, thus ensuring that your marketing, promotion and PR are not only remembered, but acted upon, is not easy.
Dogs are often featured on TV advertisements because everyone enjoys watching clever and spiffy animals. If the big corporates understand and utilise animals in their marketing message, why not the Micro and HBB sector too? It would certainly be a great way for the smaller businesses to give themselves a point of difference because the more traditional small businesses do not tend to think is such a creative and innovative way.
If you are on the Internet you cannot help but be aware of the viral marketing that constantly takes place. The ones that are most watched and forwarded on and on and on, are ones featuring animals, particularly dogs. This is what viral marketing is.
There are three wonderful segments currently being sent around the Internet (the morning news in Melbourne, Australia, even had one of them on their news show). One of a skateboarding bull dog; another of a skateboarding terrier and another of a line dancing golden retriever. They are so much fun to watch.
But what if they also had a marketing message? Where is the skateboard manufacturer? He should be paying to have these dogs riding his boards as hundreds of thousands watch the performance via the Internet. And what about a manufacturer selling fancy cowboy boots with the woman working with the line dancing dog wearing them and getting heaps of viral marketing.
You may well ask does this only work as video productions on the Internet? The answer is no. The success of this type of marketing will depend to a large degree on how far you are prepared to go.
Home Based Business Australia has a young Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Cooper, as their PR Resultant. He has his own business card (which the President hands out); his own email and runs his own forum discussion and he gets tons of responses.
Why does this crazy marketing work? There are a couple of reasons. One is because people do love dogs, particularly cute and/or butch ones. Secondly, using a dog in an unrelated message is quirky and fun and people like to have a laugh! And thirdly, people do like to see creative, innovative and interesting ideas. If the marketing message is sexy then the business probably is too!
If more businesses utilised animals in their marketing material they might see a huge explosion in the growth of their business. However it must be carried through a number of channels as has been done with Copper.
The photo of a dog together with the message needs to be designed by a graphic designer to ensure a professional finish. Who can argue with creative messages that are professionally executed?

More and more businesses are monitoring the way they spend their advertising money. Yellow pages is one example of how advertising is changing. So is radio and television advertising. Let’s look at how to be more effective with online marketing whether your business is on the internet now or not.
First of all you have to understand that any kind of marketing can be effective if it is targeting the right audience. Running a radio ad for cowboy boots to teenage rappers is an example of poorly targeted advertising. So is listing your website about cars in a directory listing for music downloads. You have to get your target right.
This is still a big problem for people who do online marketing because they are intimidated by the internet in general. Unless you have a very large budget you can quickly deplete your advertising funds and be out of business with no sales by not knowing or reaching your target market.
Pay per click advertising is an example of being able to target your market and only pay for quality traffic. This is probably one of the greatest things the internet has given business owners. The ability to not waste money on advertising allows you to do more of it.
But even ppc advertising is not without it’s problems.
You have to know how much you are paying per click, how many clicks does it take to get a sale, and how many sales does it take to cover the cost of your advertising. Knowing your break even point is the key in knowing how much to bid per click.
Google Adwords is one of the most popular forms of online marketing and much has been written about how to do it correctly. Because Google gets about half of all search engine traffic everyday you want your business on it.
A good pay per click campaign with Google Adwords can really pay off for you in terms of targeting your market and increasing your sales. If you sell a high ticket item you may not need as many sales to find your break even point. With a lower priced item you may have to make up for that in volume before breaking even. This is why targeting your visitors and pay per click work so well together.
Let’s see if someone in offline business is going to become an expert in tracking what is working and what is not. Offline businesses can ask their customers on the phone, how did you hear from us. They can keep a simple stroke sheet that let’s them know that newspaper ads are where they get the most calls, but radio ads are where they get the most sales. Armed with that kind of information they could ramp up on more radio ads and improve their profitability.
Same thing with internet advertising. You can use different urls to track the same ad. Then run it in various places like traffic exchanges or ezine advertising. Check your website stats to see which url is pulling in the most traffic. Knowing this will allow you to do more of that type of advertising. It will also tell you where to promote more. If one eNewsletter gets you more sales than another then that may be a newsletter to advertise on a weekly basis versus once a month.
Hopefully you get the idea. You have to know your target market and then you have to promote to it. Tracking how you spend your online marketing dollars and what is working is the key to increasing your business and profitability.

How to Market Yourself in Your Underwear
“Ayieeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaa!!!!”
I thought the two startled businessmen were going to leave a surprise in their shorts. They were bushwhacked from behind the bush by bushwacky. The street crowd held their collective sides as they split with laughter.
One of the two best places in America to watch street performers is at Fisherman’s Wharf. The two San Franciscans fell victim to the diminutive little man who had set up his small bush office on the sidewalk of the Embarcadero near Pier 39. Squatting behind it he would spy unsuspecting tourists walking towards him and prepare for the pounce. After surviving your own scare, you’d move several strides down the walkway so as to not draw attention to him and watch and wait with glee for his next unwitting cast member to take center stage. Beside him his donation cup was overflowing with tips from his formerly terrified but now amused audience.
I’m a student of marketing. And bushwhacking is a marvelous technique in the appropriate environment: well-known street performing area, tourists, people having fun. It was the unexpected technique in the expected environment that surprised you. A technique you’d never forget. Ever. Something you’d tell others about for a lifetime. We can all learn from marketing geniuses like the bushwacky.
Roy H. Williams, the Wizard of Ads, says the focus of your marketing is to “surprise Broca”. French surgeon and anthropologist Paul Broca, in 1861, was the first to identify the left hemisphere of the brain as involved with speech production, in particular assessing the order of the words as they’re used. Williams refers to Broca as “the theater critic of the imagination; the part of the human mind that anticipates and ignores the predictable. ” Williams says your goal in marketing is to surprise Broca with the unexpected so your message won’t be ignored.
“The common, the mundane, the average, the predictable are ignored,” says Williams, while “the unusual, the intriguing, the fascinating are immediately spied and examined. ” If you want to stand out from the sales and marketing predictables make every contact a Broca surprise.
Returning to Fisherman’s Wharf the following year for another marketing lesson, a street performer was gracing the public with his guitar. His donations cup runneth over. In haste he had taken a magic marker to a scrap of cardboard found behind a restaurant and scribbled his message to position nearby: “Yes, it’s for beer. ” Truth in advertising surprises.
The other best place in America to see street marketers is at Times Square in Manhattan, the island’s tourist magnet. Returning to our hotel from Penn Station we saw a crowd gathered at the corner across from the kiosk’s neon sign proclaiming “New York Police”. We heard the laughter. Crowd? Laughter? People having fun? Times Square? July? This must be something special.
We inched our way to the front of the gawkers. Playing his guitar and wearing his hat and boots was the Singing Cowboy of Times Square. His opened guitar case was producing money faster than the U. S. Mint. A marketing genius. His singing abilities sucked, and I don’t think he really knew how to play that guitar. So how did he surprise Broca? Did I mention that he was wearing his hat and cowboy boots? I did? And did I also mention that the only other thing he had on was his jockey underwear? A minimalist who knows how to market. I guess he goes undercover when the snow falls.
What do you do to get remembered in your predictable business world? Does your marketing scream “Look at me! I’m just like everyone else. ” (Do you recall the actual car promoted in that last slick television ad?) Do you numb with rote presentations? Are you ignored with your uninspired voicemail leave behinds? Or do you do stand out by doing the unusual, the intriguing, and the fascinating?
