Discovering the Rich Culture of Tennessee

Long before the Elvis and County Music came along, the famous state of Tennessee was the home to huge communities of prehistoric people. According to archaeologists, the very first inhabitants of this place arrived in Tennessee at least 12,000 years ago i. e. shortly after the end of last ice era. 2) Ideally located in the south of Jackson, the Pinson Mounds State Archaeological Park is another major attraction for the place. This excellent archaeological site is the largest of the entire Woodland Period prehistoric archaeological sites in the American Southeast, occupied during the era from 200 B. C. to 400 A. D. It consists of approximately 12 earthen mounds along with a large enclosure or palisade. The primary mound at the Pinson is also famous, known as Saul’s Mound, and stands about 72 feet tall. It was among the tallest manmade structures north of Rio Grande since construction.
3) Being the very last border state to break away from the Union in the American Civil War, Tennessee is a home to various battlefields, many of which are still maintained and preserved for visitors. These provide excellent historic attractions, guided tours and displays along with hiking and natural trails where one can easily hear the ghosts of the early ages.
4) No trip to this state would be complete without visiting Graceland, which is the final resting place and home of the King of Rock and Roll. This exceptional site consists of guided tours to custom airplanes, grounds and mansion, and the Elvis Automobile Museum.
5) The rich culture of Tennessee is also well depicted in the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival. It is a four day annual festival, specially produced as well as created by the famous Superfly Productions and AC Entertainment. Recently, this festival was named the Best Festival and is held at the Great Stage Park in Manchester, Tennessee. A Brief Historic Look at Tennessee

Located in the East South Central part of the United States, the state of Tennessee lies between the Mississippi River on the west and the Appalachian Mountains on the east. Tennessee is the border state between the North and the South. Tennessee joined the United States Union on June 1, 1796 as the 16th state.
Tennessee had an internal conflict that took roots during the American Civil War. While the south was for the union, the north seceded. This difference is at times still apparent in the time tested difference between the lowland and upland.
Other interesting facts about Tennessee are:
1) Tennessee acquired its name from the word “Tanasi”, a word in the Cherokee language and the name of a village on the river of Little Tennessee. The river is rumored to be named after the village and the region was named Tennessee after the river.
2) The eastern part of Tennessee is a rugged terrain that is green and dense with forest and bush. This area was settled mainly by pioneering and independent yeoman farmers. It was an isolated territory until the early 20th century. The west at that time flourished with cotton farming and was linked to the rest of the country through the Mississippi River. The central region also had good connections and thus developed a thriving economy.
3) Tennessee is divided into three grand divisions where each has its own regional center:
East Tennessee – Chattanooga and Knoxville
Middle Tennessee – the capital, Nashville – largest metropolis
West Tennessee – Memphis – biggest city on the basis of population
4) The state of Tennessee is also known as the Volunteer State, in recognition of the display of valor by volunteers that came from the state during the historic wars in the 18th and 19th centuries. Tennessee was first explored by Europeans and was inhabited by the Cherokee after driving away the Uchee. Cherokee ultimately claimed East Tennessee and the Choctaw claimed the central region with the Shawnee laying claim to lower Cumberland area. The West Tennessee enclosed between the rivers (Tennessee and Mississippi) was claimed by the Chickasaw.
5) Then came the British and organized the Ft. Loudon in 1756. This was located in east Tennessee and the Treaty of Hard Labour in 1763 made way for the settlement of Virginians and North Carolinians. The first government of Tennessee was formed in 1771 and was called the Watauga Association.
6) After getting the statehood, Tennessee’s history was linked with the military career of Andrew Jackson and his campaigns in the Indian Wars and the Battle of New Orleans. The Chickasaw were brought over by the United States government as a matter of policy and were relocated to Oklahoma. Tennessee for its part of the American Civil War saw about 400 battles being fought within its confines and a wide range of epidemics took their toll on its populace after the war.
With such a leading role in American Civil War and formation of United States of America, Tennessee is a place to visit and explore the American history and culture. Not only this, Tennessee has much to offer in terms of its rich cowboy culture, western way of life, country music, whiskey and its beautiful landscape. Tennessee Cowboy Culture and What it Represents

A cowboy is no “boy” as it sounds but according to the Webster’s dictionary, a cowboy is “somebody who is hired to take care of the cattle, performing duties on a horseback, particularly in the western United States”. Although the culture has been popularized by many western movies in the past, the cowboy culture still exists despite the decline in themed movie-making.
Many cowboys still live across the US although the mode of their transport has modernized from a horse to four wheelers or pickup trucks. Tennessee cowboys are no different and have also gone modern themselves over time. Although the clothing like cowboy boots, the western gun holster and transport modes have changed, the Tennessee cowboys still follow the same rules, code of conduct and standards that were set by the cowboys of the earlier generations.
Changing times have changes the perception of a cowboy somewhat. This change has been partly because of the western movies and partly due to the changing technology and times.
Tennessee Cowboys
The original cowboys of Tennessee were soldiers form the American civil war that had lost their homes and did not know where to return to and hence drifted west generally since at that time the west was a wide open and barren country and men only carried what they could on horsebacks. These lost men were then often hired by ranch owners to look after their livestock in order to tend to them and round up the wilder variety from their midst. When the cattle were ready to be slaughtered, the cowboys were responsible to round them up and herd them to the markets that were miles away.
This era lasted for almost three decades during which the Tennessee cowboys who also herded cattle became folklore and made a lasting impression on the American history. A cowboy is not necessarily the one who sports a wrangler and boots, along with wide-brimmed hats that carried guns. As the Tennessee cowboy folklore is more about a way of life and it defined living life with utmost passion and to its fullest, even in movies we have generally seen a cowboy as the one who was free to go anywhere on the prairies with nothing or no one to stop him. This depicts the freedom that life has to offer to anyone who is willing to take it.
The cowboy culture is what every American hangs on to, even today. Although the Wranglers, boots and hats will never go out of fashion and the country music will always sound as sweet, collecting the cowboy relics and cherishing them everyone in America immense pleasure. To adopt this, we do not need to wear a pair of Wranglers or hang on to boots and hats, having a great passion and living life to the fullest is what matters as far as the Tennessee cowboy culture goes.

Tennessee can provide you with a pleasant slice of an old west experience. The state provides horse back riding. They even provide for camping trips that extend overnight. When it comes to horse rides, you need not be ornamented to look like a cowboy; however, make sure that you have short and thick heeled footwear. Plus if you can have a hat with an edge that can keep your face protected from the sun, that would be great too. The hat with a brim will additionally keep insects and trail dust from getting in your face. And keep in mind that layered clothing works best for adapting to the temperature changes in your overnight camp.
Western Clothing
When you have boots, layered clothing and a hat, you are nearly dressed up to the hilt for cowboy mode. Then shop around for cowboy gun bolsters, cowboy boots and everything you need to complete your look and you’re ready to start shouting, “Yee-haw!” with hat held high in the air.
You will be enjoying a whole range of authentic western activities in Tennessee if you can plan overnight trips, well prepared with insect repellents and camera of course. While darkness covers the scene, you will be cooking and singing over your open fire. You can organize an open campfire and prepare your own cowboy meals in groups, roasting marshmallows, singing out cowboy songs and whispering stories of ghosts and lot of things, too.
